Below is an introductory letter that my partners have prepared for you:
Dear Mr. Hanson’s students and families,
In an effort to continue to help and empower all students K-12, TEAM (Teens Empowering Academics and Medicine) United, which is a nonprofit organization, has committed to helping out the student community during the COVID-19 outbreak. TEAM United is providing free 1:1 online tutoring to students who want to continue learning in any subject. While TEAM United is free, parents who want to pay can donate to UW Medicine, which is linked on our website to help doctors and hospitals all over Washington. Any amount, no matter big or small, can make a tremendous difference in helping our frontline workers. Donations are not required, but highly encouraged and appreciated. Thank you for your support and generosity!
TEAM United is completely student-led. We have over 70 experienced high school tutors willing to help peers of any grade level. All of our tutors are hand-picked and talented high schoolers who have shown great aptitude in various subjects that range from Algebra I to AP Calculus AB, language arts, lab sciences, foreign language, SAT/ACT prep, and general college counseling. We also have tutors who are knowledgeable in the areas of CogAT, ITBS, and other gifted program qualification exams for elementary school students seeking support in these areas. Whether elementary, middle, or high, all subjects are tutored. Mr. Hanson is committed to coordinating the service for his elementary and middle school students. We also seek to help manage students with schedules and self-learning while parents manage working from home or essential jobs during the time of crisis.
We, TEAM United, believe that the greatest form of service is through education and would like to further enrich our community through providing equal academic opportunities. If you are interested in hearing more from us, please do not hesitate to email us any questions. We are a team that embraces suggestions and feedback, as it will further allow us to give back to our very community.
Thank you for your time and support. We look forward to hearing back from you.
Please feel free to reach out to Mr. Hanson or TEAM United if any questions arise.

After analyzing the survey results from the email I sent out after class last Saturday, it looks like my originally proposed new Zoom meeting time which was 7:00 PM - 7:50 PM on Saturdays will not work.
I took into account the preferences of all parents that responded and came to the following conclusion:
-Overall, twice on weekends during early afternoon with 50 minute sessions is preferred.
Therefore, I am officially moving our Zoom time to Saturdays AND Sundays 1:00 PM - 1:50 PM starting THIS weekend!
If you have an opposition to this, please let me know by Friday. If you like it, then reply saying that you like it by Friday.
Based on the Governor's order, it does not look like we will be returning to Newport High School to host in-person classes this semester. I am required by NWCS to create a 14 class curriculum with a mid-term and final exam. In light of these, I have created the following schedule for this class:
4/4/2020 - Class 1 (completed)
4/11/2020 - Class 2
4/12/2020 - Class 3
4/18/2020 - Class 4
4/19/2020 - Class 5
4/25/2020 - Class 6
4/26/2020 - Class 7
Short Mid-term Exam on TeacherEase
5/2/2020 - Class 8
5/3/2020 - Class 9
5/9/2020 - Class 10
5/10/2020 - Class 11
5/16/2020 - Class 12
5/17/2020 - Class 13
5/23/2020 - Class 14
Short Final Exam on TeacherEase
This course will officially end on 5/31/2020, meaning that all work in TeacherEase is due by that date to receive any credit including the mid-term and final exams. There will be no Zoom sessions on 5/24, 5/30, 5/31.
Grading for this course will be Pass/Fail this semester. 60% is a pass, so even if your student chooses to only complete 60% of the work in TeacherEase, they will pass this course!
To stay healthy, please remember to continue practicing social distancing and wash your hands regularly. To stay safe, please remember to reduce the amount of times you leave the house. We're all in this together!
Thank you again for reading my emails to keep updated on this class's progress. As always, don't hesitate to reach out with any questions, comments, or concerns that you have!
Have a great rest of your week and see you all this weekend!
Thank you for attending our first Zoom class today. Everyone was there and it was overall a huge success! I would like to take a moment to update you guys on my plan for this class going forward, so it is imperative that you read this email.
1. Here's the plan for classwork:
We will conduct a Zoom meeting ideally once a week on Saturdays with each session being 50 minutes long. I would like to adjust the schedule to evening time from 7:00 PM to 7:50 PM EVERY Saturday. Please let me know if this does not work for you.
Please try to reduce the amount of background noise and distractions during our Zoom meetings. I encourage parents to attend the class with their student although it is not required. If you suspect that something loud is going on in the background, please have your student on mute until that sound is resolved.
2. Here's the plan for homework:
- Homework consists of reading and writing practice
- Login to TeacherEase and work on assignments that are marked in red and "missing." The red and "missing" mark will be removed from assignments once they are turned in and evaluated. I will provide feedback on certain assignments. Note that you are only recommended to complete the assignments that are due before or on the next Zoom meeting. You are also more than welcome to work at a faster pace if you would like.
- Workbook pages are typically classwork, NOT homework. There are a few writing pages that are homework. Directions for those are in TeacherEase once you get to them.
If you would like our Zoom sessions to be twice a week instead or once a week with 2 hour sessions, please let me know. If you like my new proposed schedule the way it is then just keep doing what you have been doing. I will do my best to accommodate by taking a majority consensus.
Thank you for all you do and taking the time to read my emails. I hope that I can be of help to the students during this unprecedented time. If you have any questions or comments, please don't hesitate to reach out!
Please stay healthy and work hard!
Good evening all,
Please save this particular email for future reference. Read this email to its entirety as it contains critical information. You will need the Zoom meeting ID for future meetings.
Firstly, if you haven't already, please fill out the NWCS Online Learning Consent Form (attached) and return it to me as a picture or scanned document through email BY TOMORROW! If I do not have one for your student on file by the first Zoom meeting session, they WILL NOT be able to attend. Thank you for understanding!
Secondly, a reminder that our first Zoom class session is THIS SATURDAY April, 4th, 2020! Please keep the following in mind:
1. All work is assigned and turned in through TeacherEase. Any work that is due on or before a Zoom meeting is DUE BY THE NEXT ZOOM MEETING SESSION. Any work that is not turned in by then WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT. There will be no exceptions unless otherwise communicated with me in a timely matter. Having this in mind, there are a few assignments due by this Saturday!
2. Please refer to the Zoom usage guidelines attached in this email.
3. As of now, there were no parents who informed me of a schedule conflict, so our Zoom meetings are on Saturdays at 2:00 PM-2:50 PM. They are scheduled as needed. If there is ever a change or cancellation to this schedule, I will inform you with at least 24 hours notice.
The purpose of our Zoom meetings is to check on students' progress and provide them with reinforcing lessons, practice, Q & A sessions, etc. The majority of the work for this course is done through TeacherEase!
