5/9/2020 ELA 2-3 IMPORTANT Announcements

5/9/2020

Good evening all,
Please read the following email to its entirety as it contains critical information for you and your student to know! Thank you!
Unit 4 Online Test
Thank you for attending class today. Today, we wrapped up Unit 4: Vocabulary and Usage, which is the largest unit of the spring semester. Tonight would be the perfect time to take the Unit 4 Online Test in TeacherEase since we are moving into more application based topics starting tomorrow! Hopefully your student has learned a good amount by now since a bulk of this class's curriculum lies in Units 1-4. Units 5 and 6 are usually optional, but we are doing them this year since we have time!
Unit 5 Plan
Tomorrow, we will be working on Unit 5: Writing. Several students have already been turning in the pages for that unit, which is great! When we do Unit 5 in class starting tomorrow, I will be doing something called "Writer's Workshop." This is when I teach how to write, students practice writing, then students present their writing to the class. The next two classes will be in this format. Tomorrow will be a practice round and then next Saturday will be an official graded one. You will notice that there are assignments in TeacherEase with the name Writer's Workshop in them. Do not worry about them. We will be doing those assignments in the next two classes so it is not homework.
If I have time tomorrow, I will also be going over the synonyms/antonyms portion of the Mid-Term Exam.
There is a Unit 5 Assessment in TeacherEase, so be sure to take it when your student is ready!
Unit 6 Plan
I originally proposed for us not to do Unit 6: Research Skills this semester, but given us being very well on schedule, we will be doing it. Unit 6 will take up the last two classes of the semester.
There is a Unit 6 Assessment in TeacherEase, so be sure to take it when your student is ready!
TeacherEase Updates
Given the circumstances of a majority of students already meeting the 60% passing threshold in TeacherEase, I felt that it was necessary to add a few more essential assignments and assessments like the ones discussed above. I will also be adding more assignments in the next few days, so please keep an eye out for those. This will raise the total amount of points in this class, therefore decreasing student grades, but as long as your student is staying engaged, the assignments I add will have little to no impact to their current standing in the end or higher. I will make sure of it. I currently do not know how many points total this class will have in the end, but I suspect around 700-800 instead of the original 500.
I am also thinking about the possibility of adding a final online test that covers all units taught in this school year, which is 6 units total. It would be a comprehensive test that has questions about all units. I am planning on roughy 50 questions. This would be a good indicator for how much students learned in this school year instead of just one unit or one term. Let me know if you have any objections to this idea.
Classes 11-14 Plan Summary
Classes 11 & 12: Writer's Workshop
Classes 13 & 14: Unit 6: Research Skills

Enjoy the sunshine and see you all tomorrow! Happy Mother's Day to all the Moms out there!

Best,

Mr. Hanson

Update on NEW Zoom Schedule

4/8/2020

Hello all,
After analyzing the survey results from the email I sent out after class last Saturday, it looks like my originally proposed new Zoom meeting time which was 7:00 PM - 7:50 PM on Saturdays will not work.
I took into account the preferences of all parents that responded and came to the following conclusion:
-Overall, twice on weekends during early afternoon with 50 minute sessions is preferred.
Therefore, I am officially moving our Zoom time to Saturdays AND Sundays 1:00 PM - 1:50 PM starting THIS weekend!
If you have an opposition to this, please let me know by Friday. If you like it, then reply saying that you like it by Friday.
Based on the Governor's order, it does not look like we will be returning to Newport High School to host in-person classes this semester. I am required by NWCS to create a 14 class curriculum with a mid-term and final exam. In light of these, I have created the following schedule for this class:
4/4/2020 - Class 1 (completed)
4/11/2020 - Class 2
4/12/2020 - Class 3
4/18/2020 - Class 4
4/19/2020 - Class 5
4/25/2020 - Class 6
4/26/2020 - Class 7
Short Mid-term Exam on TeacherEase
5/2/2020 - Class 8
5/3/2020 - Class 9
5/9/2020 - Class 10
5/10/2020 - Class 11
5/16/2020 - Class 12
5/17/2020 - Class 13
5/23/2020 - Class 14
Short Final Exam on TeacherEase
This course will officially end on 5/31/2020, meaning that all work in TeacherEase is due by that date to receive any credit including the mid-term and final exams. There will be no Zoom sessions on 5/24, 5/30, 5/31.
Grading for this course will be Pass/Fail this semester. 60% is a pass, so even if your student chooses to only complete 60% of the work in TeacherEase, they will pass this course!
To stay healthy, please remember to continue practicing social distancing and wash your hands regularly. To stay safe, please remember to reduce the amount of times you leave the house. We're all in this together!
Thank you again for reading my emails to keep updated on this class's progress. As always, don't hesitate to reach out with any questions, comments, or concerns that you have!
Have a great rest of your week and see you all this weekend!

IMPORTANT Update & Plan

4/4/2020

Greetings all,
Thank you for attending our first Zoom class today. Everyone was there and it was overall a huge success! I would like to take a moment to update you guys on my plan for this class going forward, so it is imperative that you read this email.
1. Here's the plan for classwork:
We will conduct a Zoom meeting ideally once a week on Saturdays with each session being 50 minutes long. I would like to adjust the schedule to evening time from 7:00 PM to 7:50 PM EVERY Saturday. Please let me know if this does not work for you.
Please try to reduce the amount of background noise and distractions during our Zoom meetings. I encourage parents to attend the class with their student although it is not required. If you suspect that something loud is going on in the background, please have your student on mute until that sound is resolved.
2. Here's the plan for homework:
- Homework consists of reading and writing practice
- Login to TeacherEase and work on assignments that are marked in red and "missing." The red and "missing" mark will be removed from assignments once they are turned in and evaluated. I will provide feedback on certain assignments. Note that you are only recommended to complete the assignments that are due before or on the next Zoom meeting. You are also more than welcome to work at a faster pace if you would like.
- Workbook pages are typically classwork, NOT homework. There are a few writing pages that are homework. Directions for those are in TeacherEase once you get to them.
3. Survey
If you would like our Zoom sessions to be twice a week instead or once a week with 2 hour sessions, please let me know. If you like my new proposed schedule the way it is then just keep doing what you have been doing. I will do my best to accommodate by taking a majority consensus.
Thank you for all you do and taking the time to read my emails. I hope that I can be of help to the students during this unprecedented time. If you have any questions or comments, please don't hesitate to reach out!
Please stay healthy and work hard!
Warm regards,
Mr. Hanson

Online ELA 2-3 Spring 2020 Plan for Using Zoom

3/30/2020

Hello ELA 2-3 Students and Families!
We just finished our first week of the online class through TeacherEase and we are off to a great start! Thank you to those students who have already began turning in work!
It has come to my attention that having a video call component added to the class would be helpful. I will begin hosting a Zoom meeting on Saturdays at our regular class time, which is from 2:00 PM to 2:50 PM starting this Saturday 4/4/2020. Please let me know ASAP if this schedule does not work with you! If a change to this time is ever needed, I will inform you with at least 24 hour notice.
This DOES NOT mean that we will be eliminating what we have been currently doing on TeacherEase. We will just be having Zoom meetings in addition to that. So, continue what you have been doing on TeacherEase and attend our Zoom meetings. During the Zoom meetings, I will be checking and going over assignments, giving lessons, conducting Q + A sessions, etc (What we would normally do in a regular classroom setting). I do expect that all work that is due on the day of the Zoom meeting is ready at the start of the meeting.
I have attached a PDF document on guidelines for how to use Zoom.
I hope that you find this addition to our online class will better support your student's study of English!
Have a wonderful week and see you all on Saturday!
Sincerely,
Mr. Hanson

Online Spring English Language Arts 2-3 Important Info

3/25/2020

Hello My Students and Families!

Please read this email to its entirety as it outlines important information for you and your student to know regarding this online class!

If you are receiving this, then you must've also received the email I sent out a few days ago including your link to log onto our online class platform, TeacherEase. Remember, our online English Language Arts 2-3 class this semester will be done entirely on TeacherEase. I highly recommend that you and your student work on the course with a laptop or computer, NOT a smartphone or tablet. Here is some important information for you to know:
1. This class has already started as of 3/23/2020. All assignments that students should complete are up for the entire semester. There are 100 assignments in total this semester. You can access them by clicking on the grades button on the left-hand side of the home screen.
2. If you were in my gifted or english class last semester, then you should already have the course workbook. If you don't, you can place an order on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/Steck-Vaughn-Core-Skills-Language-Arts/dp/0544267869/ref=sr_1_24?ie=UTF8&qid=1536472180&sr=8-24&keywords=language+arts+grade+3+workbook
2. We finished up the longest unit, which is Unit 1: Parts of Speech in the workbook last semester. This semester, we will work on Units 2-5, which are shorter. Unit 6 will be optional. This applies to both if you were in my gifted OR english class last semester. If you are new, don't worry! There are already a few review assignments on parts of speech already in TeacherEase. You may also go over the Unit 1 pages in the workbook.
3. In TeacherEase, the due dates for assignments begin on 4/1/2020, but you are welcome to start working on the course with your student NOW! In fact, it is recommended that you get a head start!
4. Here is the course structure:
-There is no video call component for this online class. I designed this online class to be a self directed, self paced curriculum. Students can work on the class whenever they want instead of being forced to at a specific time. It would be great for parents to guide their child along this process.
-Students and/or their parents can ask me questions regarding course content or troubleshooting TeacherEase whenever they want during the course. I ask that you contact me via email or WeChat. Details on my contact info can be found here: https://mrhansondai.weebly.com/contact-mr-hanson.html
-There is an assigned page in the workbook EVERYDAY. They are all listed in TeacherEase. Your student is expected to score them themselves after they complete a page using the answer key in the back of the workbook. You will report the score to me by commenting on the specific page assignment in TeacherEase. I will then update the score in TeacherEase as soon as I can. This applies to ALL workbook pages, besides the writing ones, which I will get into.
-Tuesdays and Thursdays are reading days! I have included a reading passage on those days of the week in TeacherEase. You can download them in TeacherEase by clicking on the assignment. Tuesdays have two and Thursdays have one. Your student is expected to read the passages then answer the questions that follow. Once they are done, please take a picture or scan their work, then upload onto TeacherEase. I will grade them as soon as I can.
-Saturdays are writing days! I have assigned a writing topic with page numbers in the workbook on those days of the week. Students are expected to do the prep work, then write. Once they are done, please take a picture or scan ALL pages, then upload onto TeacherEase. I will grade them as soon as I can.
-There are a few practice worksheets that students are expected to complete. They are in TeacherEase and for download. When your student is done with those, please take a picture or scan their work, then upload onto TeacherEase. I will grade them as soon as I can.
-There is a online unit test at the end of every unit. They are computer scored multiple choice tests that students are expected to complete.
-There is a Mid Term and Final Exam. Directions are in TeacherEase once your student gets to them.
-All assignments have directions with them in TeacherEase besides workbook pages.
-If students finish the course early, then work on unit 6 of the workbook, which is not officially part of the curriculum this semester!
-The online class lasts from 4/1-5/31 assuming that NWCS is unable to open at campus. If it is able to open, the course schedule will be adjusted accordingly.
-Tentatively, all work for the course is DUE BY 5/31/2020 @ 11:59:59 PM.Any work that is not turned in by then will RECEIVE A 0. There are due dates for individual assignments in TeacherEase, but those are there as suggestions to help students keep up with the pacing. This date will be adjusted if NWCS opens.

I highly recommend that students get started on the course! There are a few very important assignments already waiting for them in TeacherEase! :)
Please don't ever hesitate to reach out to me if any questions or concerns ever pop up during the course!
Stay safe and good luck! I am looking forward to working with you all!

Warm regards,

Mr. Hanson

Welcome to Spring English Language Arts 2-3 Online!

Hello!

You are receiving this email because you have registered your child for my Online English Language Arts 2-3 class this semester! If you have not already paid the tuition, please do so ASAP through the NWCS Admin or else you will be dropped from the class.

If you don't already have the class workbook, purchase one ASAP! You will need one! If you were in my class last semester (either Gifted Exploration 2 or this class) you should already have one. We covered Unit 1 of the workbook last semester. Here is a link to order it on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Steck-Vaughn-Core-Skills-Language-Arts/dp/0544267869/ref=sr_1_24?ie=UTF8&qid=1536472180&sr=8-24&keywords=language+arts+grade+3+workbook

The entire class will be done through TeacherEase.com this semester. We will begin TODAY! A link to your student's own account is provided below:

Please use the link below to setup your TeacherEase account:
(link removed)

Feel free to login and browse the site (please allow some time for me to enter useful information). If you ever have any questions, feel free to contact me.
Once you and your student feel ready to begin the course, find the grades button on the lefthand side of the parent portal home page. All the assignments for this semester are already there! For this class, this semester will start today and end on 5/31/2020. The end date is flexible based on overall student progress. There is at least one assignment everyday. Feel free to work through the course with your student at your own pace or by following the due dates. The order in which you complete the assignments does not matter. All assignments MUST be turned in by the end date or else a 0 will be assigned to all the missing work. Here is how the course will work:

-There is one page assigned in the workbook EVERYDAY. You will grade your own work using the answer key in the back of the workbook and report to me how many problems you got wrong by commenting on the assignment in TeacherEase. You can do this by clicking on the assignment. I will try to enter your score asap.
-TUESDAYS and THURSDAYS are reading days. I will upload reading comprehension worksheets on those days of the week for your student to complete. You can access them and turn them in by clicking on the assignment. Once you turn them in, I will try to grade them asap.
-SATURDAYS are writing days. There will be assigned pages in your workbook on Saturdays that relate to writing. You will be required to take pictures or scan your work to upload when done so that I can grade them asap.
-There is one mid term exam and one final exam. Directions are in TeacherEase once you get there.
-There is no video call component for this class. It is a rather a self paced curriculum. I am here if you ever have any questions related to the coursework or TeacherEase troubleshooting. If a video call is ever needed, we can arrange one from there.
-Communication can be done with me through TeacherEase, email, or WeChat. -If needed, I will upload notes and/or other handouts for you to access.
-There may be online discussions related to the coursework if needed.

I am still finalizing the course and uploading files on TeacherEase but the first few assignments are ready to go! Feel free to begin the course with your student. I would recommend starting with the Syllabus & Schedule Agreement, Introductory Essay, and Unit 1 Test. The Unit 1 Test is basically a review test for first semester.

Please stay healthy and I look forward to working with you all this semester!

Sincerely,

Mr. Hanson

Important: ELA 2-3 Online Spring Semester Class Plan

3/21/2020

Hello English Language Arts 2-3 Families,

Parents, the following email will go over the plan to move the spring semester of this English class to online. If you like this plan, please reply to this email ASAP telling me that you are interested to get you set up!

As you all may already be aware, the NWCS Admin and Board teams decided to further delay the tentative spring semester opening date from 2/29/2020 to 4/4/2020. This new opening date is looking to be impossible due to the rising severity of the COVID-19 Coronavirus situation in our area and school closures. Many families in the NWCS community proposed the idea to open online classes. The NWCS Admin is currently working on a project to open classes online. I am apart of this project and would like to share the plan:
Through the online system, the following can be accessed on a weekly basis...
1. Notes (Word, PDF, JPG)
2. Whiteboard Pictures (JPG)
3. Classwork Handouts (PDF)
4. Homework Handouts (PDF)
5. Assessment Handouts (PDF)
6. Online Assignments (Digital, Computer Generated)
7. Student to Teacher Discussion (Digital, Computer Generated)
8. Student to Student Discussion (Digital, Computer Generated)
Students will work at their own pace with the assistance of me and a parent. They will turn in their work digitally and I will return it to them in a timely manner with feedback. Should they have any questions, they can communicate with me through the system and I will respond in a timely manner.
The ultimate goal is to keep the students learning despite the unfortunate circumstances that have come upon us. It is my mission to help them receive the same quality education as if they were to take the spring semester in person.
If you like this plan, please reply to this email ASAP telling me that you are interested to get you set up!
Should you have any questions, comments, or concerns, feel free to let me know!
I look forward to seeing you in my online class this semester!

Warm regards,

Mr. Hanson

3/4/2020 UPDATE

The NWCS admin and board teams have decided to tentatively schedule the spring semester start date to 4/4/2020. Please note that this date may change based on how the virus situation progresses.

2/28/2020 UPDATE

To my students and their families:

Due to the continued concern over the spread of the COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus, NWCS will NOT be opening for the spring semester on 2/29/2020. The situation is unpredictable at the moment, so the new NWCS opening date is unknown. Please keep an eye on NWCS updates in the next few weeks regarding this matter. Stay safe and see you in the near future!

Sincerely,

Greetings all!

I'd like to welcome everyone to my class at Northwest Chinese School! My name is Hanson Dai and I will be your student's instructor for his/her Gifted Program Prep Level 1 summer course. I am sending this email out well in advance so that the very first class will run smoothly. Please read this email to its entirety as it includes critical information for you and your student to know. Thank you!
Before we dive in, please purchase your student's textbook for this course. Here is a link to place an order on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/Practice-Test-CogAT-Grade-Level/dp/0997768045/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?keywords=cogat+grade+1&qid=1564274294&s=gateway&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1
It is imperative that your student has one in order to be successful in this course. Please have it by the first class (8/5/2019) and bring it to every class.

     1. First off, the syllabus for this course is attached in this email. Please print it out and read it over with your student. After you have read it to its entirety, please complete the last two pages of the syllabus and turn them in to me on the first day of class (8/5/2019).
     2. Secondly, my class website. I strongly believe that having a class website plays a vital role in a student's education. My class website is multi-purposeful. You and your student will be able to find everything on it relating to this course. The website includes many pages that have helpful information such as my contact information, class updates, weekly emails, my background, curriculum information, syllabi, important documents, etc. Before the first class, you and your student should explore it and get familiar with it. The link to it is: mrhansondai.weebly.com
     3. Third, my classroom database, TeacherEase. Shortly after receiving this email, you will receive another email from me including you and your child's own personalized login credentials for my classroom database. Please use the provided credentials to login to TeacherEase for the very first time, which is the website I utilize as my classroom database. Once you successfully login, you will notice that there is a grades box on the left hand side of the home-screen. Click on it. All scored assigned work that count for your child's overall grade will be entered into TeacherEase to formulate a letter grade at the end of the course. This will be apart of a report card that I handout on the last class. TeacherEase will also be utilized for communication purposes, attendance tracking, updates, reminders, etc. I strongly recommend that you and your child check progress by logging in frequently. I also strongly recommend that you always check that the score I write on the physical assignment I hand back is the same in TeacherEase. If I ever make any grading errors, please let me know ASAP! I strive to update TeacherEase as frequently as possible (Once every two days at the minimum).

Your Child's FIRST Homework Assignment, DUE: By 8/4/2019 @ 11:59:59 PM
Once you've successfully logged into TeacherEase, you will notice an assignment titled "Introduce Yourself" Digital Narrative located on the right hand side of the home screen. Click on it and start it. Follow the directions that follow. Parents, please work on it with your child. Once you are done, DO NOT forget to submit it! What your child writes will help me get to know them better.

      4. Fourth, during this course, I will send out daily class update emails and sometimes reminder emails. Expect to receive an email after every class as a follow-up. These emails will include what we did in class, whiteboard picture attachments, handout attachments, and what the homework is. Please read these emails to their entirety. These emails serve as the core to staying up-to-date with the current events in my classroom.
     5. Fifth, if you ever have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to let me know! The best method to communicate with me is email. My email is: daih.teaching@outlook.com - I work to the best of my ability to reply as fast as possible. 72 hours at the latest. You may also contact me through text. My cell phone number is: (425) 395-6120. If you call me, I will most likely not answer, so texts only please!
Lastly, you will notice in the syllabus the class materials section. Please make sure that your child has all of the required materials in order to be successful in this course. This includes for your child to have a notebook (spiral or composition) to take notes during lectures, warm-ups, and for completing other various activities. Please have all required materials by the first class! Thank you!

I am looking forward to working with all of you and an amazing two weeks!
